I nuovi LiveCDs e stage per piattaforma AMD64
sono stati rilasciati. I cambiamenti principali consistono nell'aggiornamento delle ebuild, correzioni varie ed
altri miglioramenti. Gli uteni in possesso di una piattaforma Opteron sono pregati di mettere alla prova questi prodotti
e collaborare al porting di Gentoo su AMD64.
Grandi risultati dei forum Gentoo
La maggior parte degli utenti Gentoo godono della ricchezza di informazione disponibile sui
Forum Gentoo. Mentre la popolarità di Gentoo aumentava i forum l'hanno seguito
a ruota. Ecco i risultati raggiunti:
- Più di 25000 utanti registrati
- Più di 75000 discussioni in corso
- Più di 500 giorni di attività
Inoltre il database dei fourm sta raggiungendo i 2 Gb di dimensione con circa mezzo milione di messaggi. Secondo le informazioni
di cui disponiamo è il forum più attivo di tutte le distro Linux. Nonostante i forum abbiano cominciato a sentire il peso
della crescita rimangono uno delle migliori sorgenti di informazioni a proposito di Gentoo Linux.

Per la maggior parte innocui
Alcuni han dato la colpa a baselayout, altri se la son presa con il passaggio da modutils a module-init-tools e un po' tutti concordano
sul fatto che dietro tutto ci sia devfs. Nelle scorse settimane parecchi in parecchi thread ci si è lamentati del fatto che decine
di messaggi di errore scorrono sullo schermo o intasano i log ad ogni reboot e login e logout dell'utente. Sebbene un rumore di
fondo di questo genere nei messaggi non indichi alcunchè di errato, per molti risulta fastidioso e rende un errore reale molto più
difficile da scovare. Ecco alcuni dei thread in cui si è trattato l'argomento:
2.6 Kernel popolare tra le masse
Con l'uscita del quarto test, molta gente (anche chi non si è mai cimentato prima con la serie 2.5) sta controllando se convenga passare
alla nuova versione del kernel. I più esperti tester di kernel della comunità Gentoo hanno sempre seguito con attenzione lo sviluppo
e ora sono pronti a donare qualche dritta agli ultimi venuti.

Pochi sembrano sapere che non tutti i locale vengono generati automaticamente in Gentoo e ogni tanto la questione salta fuori
in qualche post:

Capire Cron
Il demone Cron potrebbe sembrare una banalità per amministratori Linux con esperienza. Ma a volte le configurazioni possono essere
poco chiare per i nuovi utenti Linux, come Scott Jones. Scott voleva controllare la sua email ogni ora ed alcuni membri della
mailing list gli anno risposto con suggerimenti e consigli interessanti anche per i più esperti.

Cambiare Processore
Stephen ha cambiato un processore Intel P4 con un AMD Athlon XP. In un messaggio alla mailing list chiedeva
come poter evitare di reistallare Gentoo da capo. Alcuni membri della mailing list hanno proposto
varie soluzioni e valanghe di consigli perchè il processo filasse liscio.

A proposito dei CD di intallazione
Questa settimana c'è stata una discussione molto popolare
riguardante lo stato dei CD di installazione. Alcuni utenti hanno espresso perplessità riguardanti la dimensione dei LiveCD e altri
hanno subito proposto soluzione per ridurre il peso.

Convertire dati con units
Il trucco di questa settimana vi mostra come usare il comando units che è una
nifty utility che converte quantità tra scale (per esempio metri in piedi
o chilogrammi in pounds). Pur non essendo un tool essenziale, può decisamente esser utile
a volte.
