Gentoo Configuration Tools Research Project

1.  Project Description

The config tools goals and specifications are here researched and defined. The development may be done in a seperate project, in a later time.

2.  Project Goals

This project is an attempt to design tools that will make Gentoo configuration more user friendly, although these tools don't necessarely have GUI frontends.

Gentoo config tools research - Research on the config tools topic

This project is an attempt to design tools that will make Gentoo configuration more user friendly, although these tools don't necceserily have GUI frontends. This task is writing a description of what we want

Gentoo Runlevel editor - Design a runlevel configuration tool

A tool to select the services that should start/stop at specified runlevels. This tool is also able to start, stop and restart individual services.

Gentoo User Editor - Design a tool for maintaining a systems user database

A tool the manage user accounts. In the first place only local users, later on support for ldap, etc. can be added. As a first version Fedora's user editor can be used, which provides support for local users only.

Gentoo Configuration Editor - Design a tool for maintaining a systems global configuration

A tool designed for maintaining a systems global configuration, like make.conf, rc.conf, etc.

Gentoo Network Configuration Tool - Design a tool for configuring network connections

A tool to simplify network configuration. I should be able to add interfaces (to net.ethX and /etc/conf.d/net), and configure them. At a later point PPP interface support can be added to configure (ADSL) modems.
