What we've done until now

We have set up a core team of devs which goal was to set up a manifest, rules to define how we will work. This step is completed.

What we are going to do now

We can start real desktop research, on important issues. Threads will be started on the desktop-research mailing list.

Issues discussed

x11 fonts problems

  • some fonts look bad (foreign characters, some rendering problems)
  • we have too few fonts
  • a guide on howto set up and use x11 fonts could be usefull

installation
  • we can add very few work to the livecd and have a working installation
  • Luke-Jr works on something already, he should present his work
  • we need to look at GLIS and anaconda stuff too, will be done in next meeting
  • should configuration be part of the installation, or at first reboot ?

configuration tools
  • we need to decide a general guideline for config tools, integration with install
  • we will list and review existing gentoo config tools projects

bring portage access to the user
  • kportage works horribly, needs rewrite or update, no one seems to maintain it
  • in a more general manner, decide what software needs to be written to bring portage features useable by any user

desktop howto guide
  • gerrynjr proposes to update the existing desktop guide
  • guidelines
    • use the current text as a base
    • remove the mail and apache sections
    • see spider's local mail guide
    • gerrynjr has to work with SwifT, so that it's integrated with new handbook if needed
  • g2boojum and tseng agreed to review it

meetings
  • desktop-research meetings will be held on a regular basis, biweekly
  • same day and same time as the desktop meetings, but one week later

schedule
  • desktop guide rewrite should begin now
  • next meeting topic will be installation
  • we start threads in the mailing list about x11 fonts problems, config tools, and portage for the mass

2.  19 Jan 2004 meeting

New subprojects

Two new subprojects are going to be started.

subproject: Gentoo Installer

The Gentoo installer will take care of installing gentoo from any stage, and also supports GRP installs. The installer will feature plugable frontends (GUI, text based).
lead: Spyderous.
members:

  • [joe]: testing only
  • ciaranmn: SPARC related stuff
  • blackace: Esammer pointed out that this non-dev might be willing to contribute in the form of documentation
There will be a message posted to gentoo-desktop@g.o and gentoo-desktop-research@g.o to find volunteers for this subproject.

subproject: Gentoo tools

The Gentoo tools subproject will try to design tools to help administrate a gentoo box. The Gentoo tools will feature plugable frontends (GTK, QT, text-based, etc.).
lead: blubber.
members: none yet.
gentoo-desktop@g.o and gentoo-desktop-research@g.o will be polled for volunteers.

User interfaces

The goal is create a interface style suitable for the Gentoo Installer and the Gentoo tools, improving userfriendlyness.

Schedule

Planning and research for these to subprojects will start as soon as teams are formed.
