2. Important Changes for 2006.1
Gentoo 2006.1 contains security updates to address GLSAs (Gentoo Linux Security Advisories) numbered 200601-15 to 200608-17.
Individual GLSAs can be referenced by going to http://www.gentoo.org/security/en/glsa/glsa-$x.xml, and substituting $x with the desired GLSA number.

With Gentoo 2006.1 the SPARC team switched to 2.6 kernels as default. 2.4 kernels are still supported on 2.4 profiles (like 2006.1/2.4). The stages for this release are built for 2.6 kernels so if you wish to use 2.4 you'll need to re-emerge linux-headers, glibc, unmerge udev and emerge devfsd. Alternatively you can use a 2006.0 stage, switch to the 2006.1/2.4 profile and upgrade from there.
Remember that gentoo-sources are preferred for 2.6 profiles and sparc-sources for 2.4, and that you won't be able to use/boot a 2.6 installation with a 2.4 kernel.
With this release, version 7.1 of X.Org X11 is used. This is the modular version of X. For upgrading from the monolithic version of X.org (<7.0) , please follow the instructions in the the Migrating to Modular X HOWTO.

3. Upgrading and Installation of Gentoo 2006.1
The entire Gentoo Linux installation process is documented in the Gentoo Handbook.
The SPARC release team offers a Minimal and Universal InstallCD. The Minimal InstallCD can be used to install only using an Internet connection. The Universal InstallCD is useful for doing basic networkless installs.
There are two kernels available on both CDs. The 2617 option (gentoo-sources-2.6.17-r5) is the preferred choice, with the 2616 option (gentoo-sources-2.6.16-r13) being a fallback option in case of hardware incompatibilities. Please refer to the handbook for booting the CD.

Upgrading to Gentoo Linux 2006.1
If you already have a working installation of Gentoo Linux (version 2006.0) there is no need to reinstall. You will automatically get Gentoo 2006.1 if you sync your portage tree and run emerge --update world.
If you have version 2005.1 or older installed you should follow the Gentoo Linux GCC Upgrade Guide since there were changes in the SPARC ABI for newer versions of GCC, which needs you to follow a careful upgrade procedure to avoid installation problems.
