Gentoo Virtual Private Server Project

Content:

1.  Project Description

The Gentoo Virtual Private Server project aims to provide concerted development for virtualization techniques based on OS-level virtualization. We currently maintain the projects Linux-VServer and OpenVZ (aka Virtuozzo) for x86 and amd64 in Gentoo.

Virtualization is a framework or methodology of dividing the resources of a computer into multiple execution environments. Virtualization techniques create multiple isolated partitions (Virtual Machines (VM) or Virtual Private Servers (VPS)) on a single physical server. There are several kinds of virtualization techniques which provide similar features but differ in the degree of abstraction and the methods used for virtualization.

See below for a detailed description of virtualization techniques

2.  Project Goals

Our goal is to ensure that Gentoo provides the best environment possible for developing and running virtual private servers.

7.  Getting Involved

Participating

The best way to get involved with what we do is to contact one of our developers and hanging around in #gentoo-vps. You can also send an email to vserver-devs@gentoo.org.

You are more than welcome to help with the current list of bugs.

There are always things to be done (and exciting new ideas to turn into reality), and we're always looking for new ways to make Gentoo the first choice for developers and for system administrators running virtual private servers with Linux-VServer or OpenVZ.
